LESSON 5:
The Last Barrier to Wellbeing - Beliefs Around Yourself
Here, we are looking at the last barrier to wellbeing - the beliefs that we build consciously and unconsciously around ourselves.
If you look closely at the beliefs that you have about yourself, you'll see that all the labels are thought-based ideas and concepts. These mean different things to different people, so they are not actually true.
However, we become submerged and hypnotised by these mental stories. We think that this is all there is to see about reality.
What I want to highlight to you is that the noise that your mind creates is a tiny proportion of what there is to see.
Our thought-made reality is created within an infinite field of silent existence. Everything around us and in us is alive and quietly existing. In order to experience wellbeing and be resilient, we have to be aware of not just our thought-based reality, but also this silence.
When we get it, this transforms our perspectives on the world immediately and makes them very clear. It also makes us feel truly like ourselves and gives life a sense of freshness. Here, we do not suffer psychologically - so all threat and misunderstanding disappears.
It's easy to be a human in the world when we are in this state of mind. We live intuitively. In a healthy reality, people act intuitively and have fantastic natural common sense. They are great teammates and leaders in their work and family life. They are kind, excellent listeners and very innovative.
Beliefs Around Yourself
Whatever you think about yourself, it is just a thought and if it is believed to be true, a mistake has occurred. Fixed beliefs about anything in life signal that you are experiencing your unhealthy understanding in that moment - there is some unconscious misunderstanding being created.
We start creating ideas about ourselves at a very young age. The beliefs about you as an individual are the absolute foundation upon which your entire unhealthy understanding of life is built. As a child we add labels to ourselves - these come from what other people tell us or from what we conclude on our own. However, as a child, there is a lot that we don't understand in life, so we get a lot wrong. Yet, these believed mistakes can stay with us our whole lives if we don't notice we made them.
Fundamentally, there is no answer to the question, "Who am I?". If you can see that, you ignore the questions that your unhealthy understanding creates.
Then, everything starts to go quiet and we start to become aware of the peace that comes from simply experiencing existence itself. This is who you are - everyone experiences the same thing when they find out who they truly are.
You are not your personality and you are not your past or what you believe you are. Also, the body is a vehicle, it's not who you are. Many people believe that there is a person inside their body and this is who they are. However, if you look closely, you'll see that this person isn't actually there. These are all thoughts, nothing more - and if there is a voice that's talking to you, that's not you - it's your unhealthy understanding expressing itself.
When we see something healthily and accurately, we have no voice talking to us and we have a sense of peace with the experience - this signals that there is an awareness of existence, of who we are. We aren't hypnotised and lost in our tiny thought-made reality.
As our awareness expands, we start to notice that we are made of and existing in a deep, silent, peaceful moment. Here, the hold of our unhealthy understanding has been broken and so we are aware of the whole picture of reality.
Healthy Understanding = Thought-made version of our environment and everything in it + sense of being (awareness of silent existence)
The sense of presence and love that are generated here make us truly feel like ourselves. This is a pure experience of wellbeing and we need this to resolve all the issues that we have in our life.
KEY CONCEPT SUMMARY:
-
Undermining the past beliefs around yourself is essential if you want to truly experience what it feels like to gain freedom from psychological suffering and be the real you
-
Your beliefs in your individuality are very limiting and keep you trapped in unhealthy understanding
-
If we look closely, we start to see that who we are has nothing to do with our body or our personality - our awareness of how vast reality is needs to increase so that we notice existence itself
-
Finding who we are occurs when we realise that this question has no answer
-
As we lose our beliefs in who we are as an individual, we find the wellbeing and healthy mental functioning that we have been looking for our whole life. This increases our natural intuition and common sense and makes us thrive in situations that we used to struggle with
Having completed this course, it would be great to know if anything has changed in terms of how you now see your state of mind.
